NewPark Mall is a world-renowned shopping mall in Newark that was first opened in 1980. It sits on 1.16 million square feet of land and currently houses over 140 retail stores. NewPark is sometimes known as the tri-city mall because it serves three cities: Newark, Union City, and Fremont. It’s a great place for families and every third Thursday of the month, they host the NewPark Kids Club for free for kids up to 6 years old. Below, you will find more information about the mall.

Construction & History of the NewPark Mall

NewPark Mall was originally opened in a single-use location, which means that it was specifically designed to be a retail space. However, the mall had to undergo some design changes and renovations in the recent years as businesses began to leave the building. A single-use mall design is regarded as an outdated planning method in the current world, so there was a need to re-design the mall to be a mixed-use commercial center that can anchor retail stores and offices, as well as housing facilities.

The extensive renovations, which were completed in 2017, saw the addition of an IMAX-screen in the AMC movie complex, which has 12 screens. In addition to that, there was also a sophisticated restaurant section that is glassed-walled and offers stunning views of the property and surrounding areas. The newly finished multi-million re-design will cater for the needs of Newark’s educated and wealthy customer base. This makes NewPark mall the leading shopping destination, dining, and entertainment center in the East Bay.

NewPark Mall is located along the I-880 freeway and it is a heavily populated metropolitan region with more than 500,000 people. It is also close to Newark Memorial High School and Ohlone College, Newark campus. Other nearby areas include the Mowry East Shopping Center, Cedar Boulevard, BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse, Fremont Ford, and others.

Anchor Stores

When the mall was first opened, it hosted Sears and Macy’s only, but an expansion carried out in 1985 saw the addition of Mervyns. In 1989, Emporium-Capwell joined the mall and then JC Penney followed suit in 1991. However, Emporium-Capwell closed in 1996 and the store was changed to Target. Old Navy joined NewPark mall in 2000, but it was closed in 2005, and in 2007 the store changed to Steve & Barry’s. Burlington Coat Factory replaced Mervyns in 2010, followed by AMC Theatres replacing Target in 2012.

Newpark Mall’s anchor stores, which cater to different aspects of life, include stores and restaurants like Burger King, Subway, GameStop, Sprint, T-Mobile, ATM Services, Body Gear, Rasputin Music and DVDs, H &M, Forever 21, Victoria’s Secret, Box Lunch, Disney Store, the Children’s Place, Steve’s Hallmark, Spencer’s, Sears, Macy’s, JC Penney, Burlington Coat Factory, Vans, Foot Locker and so much more.

Conclusion

Overall, Newpark Mall has something for everyone, from the cheapest department stores to high end design retailers. Two pizza restaurants opened last year to add more excitement to the mall. They’ve also added electrical vehicle parking stations and redesigned bathrooms. Every Sunday there is a Farmer’s Market from 9am - 1pm in the parking lot, so bring the family for some fresh produce and other goodies!
